Crown & Anchor dates from the 18th Century. It was once a popular gambling game in the Royal Navy and in the fishing fleets. The board or cloth is divided into six sectors with a different symbol in each sector. These symbols are a Crown, an Anchor, and the four suit symbols, a Club, Diamond, Heart and Spade. Three identical cubic dice have these same six symbols on their faces. Any number can play. One player is the banker; the other players place coins or chips on the symbols of their choice. A player may bet on more than one symbol if they choose to. The banker throws the three dice and pays evens on a match, 2 to 1 on doubles and 3 to 1 on triplets (the dice showing the same three symbols). However, these odds are not fixed and can be adapted, depending on the generosity of the banker.
